National Drone and Counter-Drone Strategy Task Force Launched to Identify Policy Initiatives for the Drone Industry
Priorities Include Expanding Public-Sector Demand and Establishing a National Counter-Drone System
[The Inside Story / Reporter Moon Hong-cherl] = The Office for Government Policy Coordination announced on the 2nd that the "National Drone and Counter-Drone Strategy Task Force"—operating under the Prime Minister—has held its launch ceremony and officially begun its operations.
The Task Force is tasked with overseeing and monitoring the government-wide implementation of the "National Drone and Counter-Drone Transformation Strategy," which was announced by the government on June 4. It will also identify and pursue policy initiatives designed to enhance the competitiveness of South Korea’s drone industry and effectively respond to drone-related threats.
The Task Force is headed by the Minister for Government Policy Coordination. Its membership consists of approximately 20 individuals, including government officials from the Office for Government Policy Coordination, the Ministry of National Defense, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, and the Defense Acquisition Program Administration, as well as experts from public institutions and research organizations, such as the Defense Agency for Technology and Quality.
Upon its launch, the Task Force plans to prioritize initiatives that require inter-agency cooperation, such as expanding public-sector demand for drones and establishing a national counter-drone system.
A counter-drone system refers to the technologies and frameworks used to detect, identify, and neutralize illicit or threatening drones, thereby protecting the public and critical infrastructure.
Furthermore, the Task Force intends to strengthen communication with experts from the private sector—including industry, academia, and research institutions—to ensure that on-the-ground perspectives are actively incorporated into policy. It will also facilitate the rapid coordination of key issues through collaboration among relevant government ministries.
Lim Ki-keun, head of the Task Force, stated, "Drones are a future growth engine and a vital tool for safeguarding national security and public safety. Centered around this Task Force, we will focus on breaking down silos between government ministries and uniting the capabilities of the private sector, the government, and the military."
