Foreign Minister Cho Hyun Calls for International Support for "Peaceful Coexistence and De-escalation" on the Korean Peninsula at G20
Attends G20 Foreign Ministers' Meeting in Atlanta; Emphasizes International Cooperation to Address Threats to Food Security
[The Inside Story / Reporter Moon Hong-cherl] = At the G20 Foreign Ministers' Meeting, Foreign Minister Cho Hyun requested international support for peaceful coexistence and the easing of tensions on the Korean Peninsula. He also highlighted the need for international cooperation to ensure freedom of navigation and safety in the Strait of Hormuz, and to address threats to food security—an issue directly linked to the livelihoods of the people.
Furthermore, Minister Cho proposed directions for cooperation, such as strengthening collective response capabilities and facilitating energy transitions to secure stable and affordable energy. He underscored that diversifying supply chains—going beyond mere energy stockpiling—is of critical importance.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on the 2nd that Minister Cho attended the G20 Foreign Ministers' Meeting, held in Atlanta, USA, from the 30th to the 31st of last month. During the sessions, he discussed G20-level cooperation strategies to address key global challenges, including geopolitical tensions (Session 1), energy (Session 2), and supply chains (Session 3).
The meeting, chaired by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, was attended by representatives from G20 member nations, as well as the Foreign Minister of Poland, who participated as an invited guest.
Minister Cho shed light on the impact of geopolitical conflicts on the global economy, specifically emphasizing the necessity for international cooperation to guarantee freedom of navigation and safety in the Strait of Hormuz, and to counter threats to food security that directly affect the well-being of the public. In this regard, it was noted that South Korea has recently joined an EU-led initiative to uphold the international law of the sea—a commitment aimed at opposing the unlawful restriction of passage through international straits. It was further stated that the South Korean government intends to continue making substantive contributions toward ensuring free and safe navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.
Regarding the situation on the Korean Peninsula, it was assessed that deepening military cooperation between North Korea and Russia is having a serious impact on the security of the Korean Peninsula and the broader region. The South Korean position concerning the landmine explosion incident in the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) was explained, and it was emphasized that dialogue and communication between the two Koreas are more critical than ever for easing tensions on the peninsula.
Minister Cho pledged that the South Korean government would spare no effort to foster peaceful coexistence and reduce tensions on the Korean Peninsula, while requesting the support and cooperation of G20 member states.
During the subsequent second session, it was pointed out that securing "stable and affordable energy" has become increasingly vital for addressing the energy crisis—exacerbated by the situation in the Middle East and the surging demand for energy driven by artificial intelligence (AI). Strategies for cooperation were proposed, including strengthening collective response capabilities and facilitating the energy transition.
In particular, it was highlighted that South Korea—leveraging its superior refining capacity, strategic stockpiling infrastructure, and maritime networks—aims to serve as an energy hub connecting oil-producing and oil-consuming nations. Furthermore, it was emphasized that South Korea will seek effective cooperative measures to bolster energy security in the Asia-Pacific region by drawing upon the expertise of organizations such as the OECD and the International Energy Agency (IEA). In the third session, it was emphasized—in light of the current conflict in the Middle East—that diversifying supply chains, rather than merely relying on energy stockpiling, is critical to overcoming over-dependence on specific regions or resources. South Korea’s efforts to strengthen the resilience of global supply chains, including its participation in the Forum on Geostrategic Resource Cooperation (FORGE), were highlighted.
Furthermore, the session acknowledged the agreement reached at this year’s G20 Energy Ministers’ Meeting to engage in voluntary cooperation regarding standards, research, and information sharing for critical minerals. It was stressed that this initiative should be developed into substantive supply chain cooperation within the G20 framework.
On the sidelines of the meeting, Minister Cho held a trilateral meeting with his counterparts from the United States and Japan. He also conducted bilateral talks with foreign ministers from various nations—including the United States, Indonesia, Germany, Poland, India, the EU, the United Kingdom, and Mexico—to discuss ways to advance bilateral relations, foster practical cooperation, and address key regional issues of mutual interest.
The South Korean government plans to strengthen coordination to ensure the success of the upcoming G20 summit and to drive tangible, substantive outcomes within the G20, leading up to 2028, when South Korea will assume the G20 presidency.
