Prime Minister Han Sung-sook Orders Expansion of Security Checks to Entire Financial Sector Following Hacking Incidents
Presided over the "Meeting of Relevant Ministers on Responding to Personal Information Leaks at Financial and Public Institutions" on the 6th
Ordered the closure and cleanup of inactive or neglected government and public institution websites
[Sageon-ui Naemak / Reporter Moon Hong-cherl] = Prime Minister Han Sung-sook ordered on the 6th that security checks be rapidly expanded across the entire financial sector in response to recent hacking incidents targeting financial institutions.
She also ordered the closure and cleanup of government and public institution websites that are currently inactive or neglected.
Prime Minister Han issued these directives while presiding over the "Meeting of Relevant Ministers on Responding to Personal Information Leaks at Financial and Public Institutions" at the Government Complex Seoul.
During the meeting, officials reviewed the response status regarding recent consecutive incidents involving the leakage of customer information from financial institutions and the exposure of employee information from public institutions, and discussed countermeasures.
Prime Minister Han emphasized, "In an era where artificial intelligence (AI) is being widely utilized for hacking and other cyber threats, the government's response strategy must undergo a complete overhaul."
She instructed the Financial Services Commission to thoroughly analyze the scope and causes of the data leaks to formulate countermeasures, to strictly oversee the implementation of measures such as customer protection and damage compensation, and to rapidly expand security inspections across the entire financial sector.
She also urged the industrial sector and public institutions to strengthen their own preventive measures and conduct emergency inspections to prevent further data leaks.
Noting that data leak incidents often originate from areas with weak security, she ordered the closure and cleanup of websites currently held by government and public institutions that are inactive or neglected. In addition, instructions were issued to assess the response capabilities of the current information security governance system—which is fragmented across sectors such as finance, healthcare, and education—and to review plans for restructuring it to align with environmental changes, such as the expansion of AI and the widespread adoption of cloud computing.
Directives were also given to the Personal Information Protection Commission to review the adequacy of the personal information protection certification system, and to the National Police Agency to concentrate all its capabilities on swiftly investigating the hacking entities responsible.
Furthermore, instructions were issued to promptly and proactively inform the public of the investigation results to prevent public anxiety caused by the spread of misinformation via social media and other channels.
