한미 외교장관 "대미 전략투자 결실 노력"…한미동맹 공약 재확인

외교부는 미국을 방문 중인 조현 외교부 장관이 이날 워싱턴 D.C.에서 마르코 루비오 미 국무장관과 한미 외교장관회담을 열고 한미관계와 한반도 문제, 지역과 글로벌 정세 등에 대해 폭넓게 의견을 교환했다고 밝혔다.

조 장관은 한국 정부가 한반도 평화의 당사자이자 페이스메이커로서 북미 대화 재개를 적극 지원해 나가겠다고 전했다.

아울러 두 장관은 북미대화를 포함해 대북정책 관련 한미 간 긴밀한 소통과 공조를 이어나가기로 했다.

이와 함께 루비오 장관은 최근 이란을 포함한 중동 정세 및 역내 평화와 안정 회복을 위한 미국의 노력을 설명했다.

조 장관은 중동 문제 해결을 위한 트럼프 대통령과 미국의 적극적인 리더십을 평가하는 한편, 호르무즈 해협에서의 자유로운 통항 회복을 위한 한국 정부의 실질적 기여 의지를 설명하면서 계속 긴밀히 소통해 나가자고 말했다.

이번 회담은 지난달 24일 두 장관의 통화 이후 3주 반 만에 개최한 것으로, 양국 관계 발전을 위한 긍정적인 동력을 더욱 확대하고 양국 간 다양한 분야에서 추진 중인 협력을 강화하기 위해 수시로 소통해 나가기로 했다.
