June Exports Surpass $100 Billion for the First Time in History… Ranked 4th Globally
Trade Surplus Exceeds $30 Billion for the First Time… Semiconductor Sector Exceeds $40 Billion for the First Time
First-Half Exports Reach $496.7 Billion, Record High for the Period… Semiconductor Exports Up 163%
[Inside Story / Reporter Moon Hong-cheol] = South Korea's June exports surpassed $100 billion for the first time in history, making it the fourth country in the world to exceed this milestone, following Germany, China, and the United States. The trade balance also recorded a surplus of $36.15 billion, an increase of $27.14 billion, surpassing the $30 billion mark for the first time.
According to the 'June 2026 Import and Export Trends' released by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy on the 1st, exports totaled $102.25 billion, a 70.9% increase compared to the same period last year. Imports rose 30.1% to $66.1 billion, and the trade balance recorded a surplus of $36.15 billion, an increase of $27.14 billion.
Semiconductor exports increased by 200%, while non-semiconductor exports rose by 28%. Average daily exports, adjusted for working days, increased by 59.5% to $4.54 billion, marking a new all-time high for the second consecutive month following last month.
By item, exports of 18 out of the top 20 major export items increased.
Semiconductor exports surged 199.5% to $44.82 billion; driven by rising fixed prices for memory due to explosive demand, the figure exceeded $40 billion for the first time in history. Computers rose 308.8% to $5.41 billion, a significant increase driven by rising demand for SSDs following expanded AI infrastructure investments by Big Tech companies. Meanwhile, wireless communication devices increased by 51.9% to $1.55 billion, showing growth centered on finished mobile phones due to strong sales of new products.
Automobiles rose 5.8% to $6.71 billion; while the increase was driven by the stabilization of parts supply and increased production volume, automotive parts fell 2.4% to $1.74 billion due to expanded localization and a delayed recovery in global new car demand.
Ships increased 12.9% to $2.83 billion; although export volume remained similar to the previous year, the growth was driven by a rise in average export unit prices resulting from increased exports of high-value-added vessels, such as LNG carriers. Petroleum products rose 49.8% to $5.59 billion; while high export unit prices led to a significant growth rate, volume decreased by 7%. Meanwhile, petrochemicals increased by 18.8% to $4.07 billion, recording a lower growth rate compared to petroleum products as product prices rose only slightly.
Steel increased by 9.6% to $2.14 billion, marking a positive figure for the first time in 14 months since April of last year. Non-ferrous metals rose 45.8% to $1.82 billion, recording the highest performance ever for the month of June.
General machinery exports increased by 7.5% to $4.08 billion, returning to positive growth after five months. Biohealth recorded its highest performance in June, rising 14.1% to $1.92 billion, while cosmetics continued their growth trend, increasing 42.5% to $1.34 billion.
Agricultural and fishery products recorded a high double-digit growth rate, rising 16.8% to $1.17 billion.
By region, exports increased in seven out of the nine major export regions.
Exports to China rose 92.1% to $20.03 billion, marking positive growth for eight consecutive months.
Exports to the United States increased 78.6% to $20.02 billion, with semiconductors, computers, cosmetics, and agricultural and fishery products recording high growth rates.
Exports to ASEAN increased 86.6% to $18.3 billion, breaking the all-time monthly record for the fifth consecutive month. Exports to the EU rose 31.8% to $7.62 billion, surpassing the all-time record for the month of June, while exports to the Middle East fell 8.4% to $1.8 billion, continuing a downward trend.
For the first half of the year, total exports reached $496.7 billion, a 48.4% increase compared to the same period last year, with 14 out of the top 20 major export items showing growth.
Imports rose 16.6% to $358.4 billion, resulting in a trade surplus of $138.3 billion.
Semiconductor exports in the first half surged 162.6% to $192.4 billion, already exceeding last year's annual total of $173.4 billion; meanwhile, exports of non-semiconductor items also increased by 16% to $304.3 billion during the first half. Automobiles, one of the two major export items, fell 1.1% to $35.9 billion. Despite logistical disruptions caused by the Middle East war, tariff measures in the U.S.—the largest market—and the resulting expansion of local production, as well as a decline in used car exports, the overall decrease was limited to a slight decline thanks to strong performance in hybrid and electric vehicle exports.
Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy Kim Jeong-kwan stated, "The first half of this year was a challenging period for export conditions, marked by the continued imposition of U.S. tariffs, logistical and energy instability due to the Middle East war, and increased external uncertainty stemming from the spread of protectionism." He emphasized, "Nevertheless, our exports set a new all-time record for the first half of the year, driven by a semiconductor boom fueled by expanded investment in AI servers, as well as strong performance across existing key items such as ships, petroleum products, and wireless communication devices, and promising consumer goods like cosmetics and agricultural and marine products." He continued by emphasizing, "As uncertainties such as U.S. tariff measures, oil price volatility, and the possibility of a global economic slowdown are expected to persist in the second half of the year, the government will continue close consultations with major countries to minimize the uncertainties faced by our companies and create a favorable export environment." He further stated, "We will provide full support to help Korea leap forward as one of the top five exporting nations by achieving not only quantitative export growth but also qualitative growth through product and market diversification and strengthening the export competitiveness of small and medium-sized enterprises."
