[사건의내막 / 문홍철 기자] = 정부가 인공지능(AI)고속도로 핵심 인프라인 '국가 AI 컴퓨팅센터' 구축에 첫 삽을 떴다.
오는 2028년까지 첨단 AI반도체 1만 5000장 규모의 센터 구축을 목표로 한다.
과학기술정보통신부는 3일 전남광주통합특별시 해남군 솔라시도 데이터센터 파크 부지에서 국가 AI 컴퓨팅센터 착공식을 개최하고 본격 건설에 착수했다고 전했다.
국가 AI 컴퓨팅센터는 AI 고속도로의 핵심 인프라로서 최신 AI컴퓨팅 자원을 확보해 AI 연구·개발 및 서비스 환경을 조성하고, 국산 AI반도체 활성화 등을 추진하며 국내 AI 생태계 성장을 지원할 계획이다.
지난해 사업자 공모를 진행해 삼성SDS 컨소시엄이 해남 솔라시도를 입지로 단독 응찰했다.
이후 기술·정책평가와 금융심사, 국민성장펀드 출자 승인 등을 거쳐 삼성SDS 컨소시엄이 최종 선정됐다.
또한 공공의 마중물 투자를 바탕으로 민간 자본과 전문성을 결집하기 위해 과기정통부와 금융위원회 국민성장펀드, 삼성SDS 컨소시엄의 민·관 합작 출자를 바탕으로 한국에이아이컴퓨팅센터주식회사(코아크)를 올해 6월 설립했다.
국가 AI 컴퓨팅센터 구축·운영은 코아크가 전담해 추진할 계획이다.
착공식에는 배경훈 부총리 겸 과기정통부 장관, 박지원 의원, 한준호 의원, 안도걸 의원, 민형배 전남광주통합특별시 시장, 안정태 코아크 대표, 이준희 삼성SDS 대표, 김유원 네이버클라우드 대표 등과 정부 관계자를 비롯해 국회, 지방자치단체, 산업은행·기업은행·정보통신산업진흥원 등에서 참석했다.
코야크는 향후 센터 운영에 필요한 전력·용수를 확보하기 위해 한국전력에 전기 사용 신청을 완료하고 용수 인입 관로공사를 진행하는 등 기반 시설을 원활히 준비하고 있다.
특히 센터 완공 전인 내년에는 국가 AI 컴퓨팅센터에 구축할 일부 AI컴퓨팅 자원을 삼성SDS 데이터센터에서 조기 서비스할 예정이다.
국가 AI 컴퓨팅센터가 구축되면 산·학·연이 합리적 가격에 이용할 수 있는 세계 최고 수준 AI컴퓨팅 인프라를 제공하고, 정부의 AI 혁신 수요에도 적극 대응하는 등 국내 AI 생태계 활성화를 지원한다.
아울러 국가 AI 컴퓨팅센터를 통해 연구개발 구역(R&D Zone)을 조성해 국산 AI반도체 설계 및 시제품 개발을 위한 검증 환경을 제공하고, 성능이 검증된 제품의 상용 서비스 운영을 통해 국산 AI반도체 활성화를 지원할 계획이다.
배경훈 부총리 겸 과기정통부 장관은 "국가 AI 컴퓨팅센터를 통해 정부와 민간이 힘을 합쳐 첨단 GPU 확보와 국산 AI반도체 활성화를 병행 추진해 AI 풀스택 경쟁력 확보에 기여하고 아시아 AI 인프라 허브로 도약할 계획"이라고 설명했다.
이어 "해남 솔라시도 데이터센터 파크가 풍부한 재생에너지와 확장 가능한 입지를 바탕으로 3대 메가 프로젝트의 핵심 거점으로 발돋움해 지역과 국가가 함께 성장하는 균형발전 모델이 될 것으로 기대된다"고 말했다.
