국가보훈부는 오는 27일 유엔군 참전의 날을 맞아 24일부터 29일까지 5박 6일 일정으로 이들의 재방한 초청행사를 개최한다고 23일 밝혔다.

 

참전용사는 6명, 유가족 21명, 정부 포상자 2명, 그리고 15개 유엔참전국 재향군인회장단 26명이다.

 

'다시 찾은 한국, 다시 보는 한국'(Re-Visit Korea, Re-View Korea)을 주제로 진행하는 이번 재방한 초청행사의 참전용사 중 최고령자는 해롤드 심락(97) 미군용사다.

 

심락 용사는 1951년 미 육군 소속 상병으로 참전해 경북 칠곡군 왜관읍 인근에서 벌어진 328고지 전투에서 활약했고, 전투 중 박격포 파편에 부상을 당하기도 했다.

 

말콤 린 윌리엄슨(95) 미군용사는 1950년 미 해군 톰슨함의 무선통신병으로 참전해 전쟁이 끝난 뒤인 1954년 10월까지 한국에 머물렀다.

전쟁 이후 처음 한국을 찾는 참전용사도 있다.

 

클리포드 피어슨(92) 영국군용사는 육군 왕립 전기기계공병대 소속 병장으로 참전해 전투 중에 손상된 군용차량을 회수하는 임무를 수행했다.

 

69년 만에 아내와 함께 한국을 찾는 피어슨 참전용사는 "폐허 위에서 다시 일어난 한국의 눈부신 발전을 목도하고 싶다"고 밝혔다.

 

알폰스 마텔(92) 캐나다군용사는 왕립 제22연대 소속 상병으로 참전해 전역 후에도 캐나다 한국참전용사회 55지부 회장과 본부 부회장을 역임하며 캐나다 한국전 참전용사 복지를 비롯해 한국전쟁을 알리기 위해 노력한 공로를 인정받아 2012년 캐나다 보훈부장관 표창, 올해는 킹 찰스 대관식 기념훈장을 받았다.

 

정부는 올해 유엔군 참전의 날을 맞아 고 프레드 맥기 참전용사에게 최고 등급의 무공훈장인 태극무공훈장을 추서한다.

 

또한, 이번 재방한 행사에는 15개 참전국 재향군인회장단이 서울국제향군포럼 참석 등의 일정을 함께한다.

 

참전용사를 비롯한 참가자들은 24일 입국해 25일 전쟁기념관과 26일 판문점을 방문하고 27일 유엔군 참전의 날 기념식에 참석한 뒤 28일 보훈부 장관 주재 감사 만찬을 끝으로 29일 출국한다.

 

강정애 보훈부 장관은 "우리 정부와 국민은 대한민국을 지키기 위해 목숨을 걸고 투혼을 발휘했던 영웅들의 희생과 공헌을 영원히 기억하고 보답하겠다"고 밝히고 "유엔참전용사 초청을 비롯한 현지 위로·감사 행사, 참전국 후손 교류 등 다양한 국제보훈사업으로 22개 유엔참전국과의 연대를 강화해 나가겠다"고 강조했다.
