Hyundai Steel builds ‘sustainable growth eco-friendly steel company’

Prospects to actively introduce and utilize the leading technologies related to mineral resources possessed by the Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources

[Introduction to the case/Reporter Park Yeon-pa] = At the forefront of the interlocking changes in the industrial paradigm and changes in social values, the topic of carbon neutrality exists. Today, carbon neutrality is approaching us as the most important task that represents the sustainability of mankind.

In response, Hyundai Steel has recently been reborn as a steel company capable of sustainable growth by developing new products through changes and innovations, from the recent signing of an MOU for carbon-neutral technical cooperation with the Energy Research Institute and the Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources, the development of eco-friendly vehicle steel plates, and the development of ultra-high-performance cryogenic LNG heavy plates. have.

Signed an MOU for carbon-neutral technical cooperation with the Energy Technology Research Institute

On May 20, Hyundai Steel held a "CCUS (Carbon Capture and Utilization Storage Technology), Hydrogen Production and Energy Efficiency Improvement Technology" at the Korea Energy Research Institute in Daejeon with the presence of Kim Jong-nam, president of the Korea Energy Research Institute, and An Dong-il, president of Hyundai Steel. We have signed a carbon neutral MOU for cooperation.”

Since 2016, Hyundai Steel has been steadily promoting technological cooperation in the greenhouse gas and energy sectors with the Korea Energy Research Institute to establish a low-carbon production system.

According to this business agreement, Hyundai Steel plans to utilize the leading energy-related technologies possessed by the Korea Energy Research Institute to improve the performance of steelworks facilities and optimize operations. In addition, it is expected that the development of technologies that can realize carbon neutrality in the mid- to long-term, such as hydrogen production, CCUS, and carbon-free combustion, which are the basic technologies for green steel, can be rapidly promoted.

What Hyundai Steel is particularly looking forward to through this MOU is the development of 'blue hydrogen' production technology that doubles hydrogen production by changing the components in by-product gas itself, unlike the existing commercial technology that simply separates and purifies hydrogen in by-product gas. . It is also expected that this cooperation will accelerate the securing of technology to produce a large amount of hydrogen for reduction, which is required for hydrogen reduction iron and steel.

In addition, the Korea Energy Research Institute plans to actively review various CCUS-related element technologies, such as CO2 capture technology and CO2-using product conversion technology, to be utilized in the steelmaking process.

Dong-il Ahn, president of Hyundai Steel, said, "We plan to greatly enhance energy and environment-related demonstrative technologies in cooperation with the Korea Energy Research Institute in the future." We will take the lead in building a low-carbon environment for the industry,” he said.

Signed MOU for technological cooperation with geological resources and carbon reduction of steel raw materials

On May 23rd, Hyundai Steel held an agreement for cooperation in the development of optimal use of steelwork materials and operation technology at the Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources in Daejeon, in the presence of Lee Pyeong-gu, president of the Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources, and Choi Joo-tae, head of the R&D division of Hyundai Steel. ' was signed.

With this agreement, Hyundai Steel will be able to establish a strategic partnership related to carbon-neutral technology in the field of steel raw materials. Through this, it is expected to actively introduce and utilize the leading technology related to mineral resources possessed by the Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources.

In addition, by utilizing the resource recycling technology possessed by the Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources, it is expected that not only will it increase the added value of waste resources, but also reduce the amount of carbon and harmful substances emitted when using raw materials.

Joo-Tae Choi, general manager of Hyundai Steel, said, “I am very excited to cooperate with the only research institute specializing in the field of mineral resources in Korea. We will take the lead in realizing low-carbon management.”

Mass production of 1.8 gigabyte class ultra-high-strength hot stamping steel sheet for the first time in the world

Hyundai Steel succeeded in mass production for the first time in the world by developing 1.8 GPa (gigapascal) premium hot stamping steel together with the Hyundai Motor Kia Namyang Research Center for Basic Materials.

* GPa (Gigapascal): A unit for measuring the strength of materials, 1 ㎬ is the strength that can withstand the weight of 100 kg of a material with a size of 1 mm in width and length, which is more than twice as strong as the existing car exterior plate.

It is supplying new steel types to Hyundai Motor's next-generation electric vehicle, the Genesis Electrified G80 (G80EV) and the new G90. The initial supply to Hyundai Motors started last year, and from this year on, it will supply 145,000 units annually. This is the amount that can be used for about 30,000 electric vehicles.

The 1.8GPa ultra-high-strength hot stamping steel has the advantage of not only making the vehicle lighter, but also ensuring the safety of passengers in the event of a car crash. Compared to the existing 1.5GPa hot stamping steel, the tensile strength is improved by 20%, and the weight can be reduced by about 10% when manufacturing parts.

In a general hot stamping method, a steel plate is heated to a high temperature of 900 degrees Celsius or more in a heating furnace, put into a mold, and rapidly cooled to manufacture parts. The Basic Materials Research Center of Hyundai Steel and Hyundai Motor Company Namyang R&D Center developed a specialized method that lowered the temperature of the heating furnace by more than 50°C, breaking away from the existing method, and applied it to parts production.

Currently, the demand for high-strength and lightweight materials applied to eco-friendly vehicles is increasing significantly. This is because the weight of the vehicle is increasing as the ratio of battery weight to electronic components is increasing.

HMC and Kia are gradually increasing the application rate of hot stamping parts to achieve lighter weight of eco-friendly vehicles.

Targeting the eco-friendly LNG market by developing cryogenic plates

According to Korea's 9th Basic Plan for Electricity Supply and Demand, the proportion of LNG installed capacity in 2034 is 30.6%, and it is predicted that LNG will play a bridge role in the energy transition period when the proportion of coal decreases and the proportion of new and renewable energy increases.

The 9% Ni heavy plate developed by Hyundai Steel is an ultra-high-performance steel used in LNG fuel tanks because of its excellent resistance to impact and excellent welding performance even in cryogenic environments (-196℃).

Hyundai Steel started the development of new 9% Ni heavy plate steel from September 2018 and concentrated its R&D capabilities. As a result, in March 2020, the development of 9% nickel steel was completed, and in December of that year, KR (Korea), ABS (USA) , DNV (Norway, Germany), etc., have obtained all 9 major domestic and foreign classification certifications.

Based on this, Hyundai Steel signed a contract to supply 9% Ni steel as a fuel tank material for an LNG-powered super-large container ship under construction by Hyundai Heavy Industries in February 21st.

Materials for fuel tanks have very strict quality requirements, so they have been dependent on imports in the past. have.

In addition, Hyundai Steel passed the Korea Gas Corporation quality certification test for cryogenic steel for LNG storage tanks, 9% nickel.

Hyundai Steel has secured competitiveness in the domestic and overseas onshore LNG plant market by acquiring quality certification for products with a thickness of 6 to 45 mm and a maximum width of 4.5 m. In particular, the product width of 4.5m certified this time is the widest in the world.

Recently, the size of 9% nickel steel, such as the thickness and width, tends to increase to enable more efficient design and construction, so the importance of wide materials is rising.

Through this 9% nickel steel quality certification, Hyundai Steel has obtained the qualification as a material supplier for the Dangjin LNG production base construction project of Korea Gas Corporation, and is now able to supply steel materials necessary for the production of LNG storage tanks. In addition, it has secured the qualification to supply steel to various domestic and foreign projects designed by Korea Gas Corporation in the future.
