[The story of the case / Reporter Park Yeon-pa] = The government, local governments, coffee shops, and companies have formed a large-scale public-private alliance to solve environmental problems related to the abuse of plastic cups.
The Ministry of Environment, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Seoul City, Suwon City, SKT, KB Financial Group, Taekwang Group, Starbucks Korea, and Dalkom, etc., led a reduction in the use of disposable plastic cups at SKT's headquarters in Euljiro, Seoul on the 11th and protect the environment in daily life. The “ha:bit eco alliance” is an association created to establish good habits for reducing plastic use by mobilizing resources and capabilities by various organizations in our society and to create a sustainable environmental ecosystem based on mutual cooperation. The policy is to expand the foundation for environmental protection by linking with various organizations that value the environment.
Despite its wide use, plastic does not rot even after 500 years after landfill, causing serious environmental problems such as soil pollution and marine ecosystem destruction, and is emerging as a social problem.
The first activity of'ha:bit eco alliance' is'happy habit', which starts at the same time as its launch on the 11th. In order to reduce the use of disposable plastic cups in coffee shops, it is an environment that recommends the use of tumblers and personal mugs. It's a project. 'Ha:bit eco alliance' will continue to promote an environmental program with a long-term goal of becoming a store without disposable plastics.
For this project, the public-private alliance has developed the “Happy Happy” app, an environmental platform that can manage the performance of each participant and provide benefits based on ICT. Anyone who has an Android phone or an iPhone can feel the pride of contributing to environmental protection by installing the “Happy Happy” app on their smartphones to check the performance status of all participants including themselves in real time.
In addition, according to the participation performance, the participating companies will also provide benefits such as a FLO discount coupon for one-time users, a 1-month free WAVVE ticket for 33 and 77 users, and a Cinecube movie advance ticket, respectively. Various events including free drink coupons are planned for each coffee shop.
In this project, six coffee shops including Starbucks, Sweet, Beautiful Coffee, Café O Asia, Café Dream, and Huneed will participate. Some coffee shops and coffee shops located in participating companies' offices, such as the Seoul City Hall, are given priority. An eco-friendly signboard is attached to the entrance of the coffee shop so that customers can easily find the store. Starbucks is planning to participate in this campaign in 2021 after preparation, and the number of stores that can use the ‘happy habit’ app is expected to increase rapidly in the future.
Ministry of Environment Minister Jo Myeong-Rae said, “It is of great significance that various organizations in our society gather for the first time in Korea to practice with a common goal of solving the problem of plastic abuse.” I look forward to being able to do it.”
SV Innovation Center Director Yoo Woong-hwan of SKT said, “We agreed on the formation of ha:bit eco alliance with the belief that it is impossible to do it alone, but we can do it together.”
